"If liquids were a factor, wouldn't everyone wet the bed?"
Common Myths About Bedwetting
Is Bedwetting Psychologically Based? Many parents believe their child is wetting the bed in response to some emotional event. This results in "guilt and blame". This simply is NOT TRUE. It is the bedwetting that may contribute to the emotional problems.
My Child Has A Small Bladder: Bladder size is not related to bedwetting. Bladder size may relate to the frequency of urination during the daytime, but a child knows when they have to relieve themselves. Why don't they wake up and toilet themselves? IT IS THE UNUSUAL DEEP SLEEP. They are unable to respond to their bladder signal like they do when they are awake. Also the bedwetter does not always have a full bladder when they experience a wetting. Some bedwetters wet very shortly after going to sleep and many wet multiple times per night. When this occurs the bedwetter is not wetting in response to a full bladder. They are wetting because of a loss of bladder control in that EXTREME DEEP SLEEP.
Drinking Too Much Causes Bedwetting: Common sense debunks this myth. Consider your own sitaution. Will you wet your bed because you consume fluids during the evening? Also, you are probably restricting your child's liquid intake at this time. Does your child still have bedwetting episodes? If fluids were a factor wouldn't everyone wet the bed? Drinking liquids prior to bed has nothing to do with the act of bedwetting. It can only contribute to the volume.
The Child Is Wetting To Get Attention: Anyone who believes this theory is simply "grasping at straws". Firstly, any attention given because of bedwetting is of a negative nature. No child is ever praised or given acolades because they wet their bed. Does YOUR child proudly announce that they wet their bed? Of course not. Every child knows, instinctively that wetting their bed is not a "normal" act.
Bedwetting Is Rare After 6 or 7 Years Of Age: This myth exists because bedwetting is not discussed in social situations and both parents and child don't want others to know. In fact, millions of teens and adults still experience bedwetting.
If The Child Is Not Punished, The Bedwetting Won't Affect Them: Only a parent who never experienced bedwetting would ever consider this to be true. It is our natural instinct to be in control of our bodily functions.
